I’m no pro gardener, just someone who keeps buying plants that may or may not survive the Scottish weather. Still, I’ve learned that a professional can make all the difference between a wild jungle and a neat little haven.

If you’re a homeowner tired of tangled weeds, a landlord needing tidy kerbs, or a business owner wanting smarter landscaping, there are many green-thumbed gardeners to call in Edinburgh. Let’s get to know some of the best ones today.

How much does a gardener charge in Edinburgh?

Typical gardener rates in Edinburgh hover around £22 to £25 per hour for basic maintenance tasks, especially when using local independent services.

More specialised work or higher-end providers may command £30 to £35 per hour, while complex jobs like hedge trimming, landscaping, or waste removal can cost £60 to £120 per hour, or more.

I called JDS Gardening Services when my small lawn began to resemble a wild meadow. They handled everything from mowing and pruning to weeding and tidy-ups. They even offered me garden design ideas for a longer-term refresh!

I liked that I can book them for one-off projects or regular maintenance visits, so I’m not pressured to spend when I’m on a tight budget. It also helps that they have straightforward pricing, with fixed quotes that matched my final bill.

What impressed me most was JDS’s eco-friendly approach, from carefully selected planting choices to responsible SEPA-registered waste disposal. The team also brings in serious landscaping skills, turfing, and fencing if you want to upgrade beyond basic upkeep.

They are quite popular, though, so booking during the summer can mean waiting a bit. Also, some services like larger tree surgery or complex landscaping can cost on the higher side compared to smaller outfits.

Pros

  • Wide service range
  • Transparent pricing
  • Proper waste disposal
  • Punctual, reliable team

Cons

  • Peak-season slots can book up fast
  • Larger projects may come at a premium cost

A huge thanks to them for turning my garden into a place of beauty

Thank you, JDS gardening services. All the people I dealt with from sales and in the office were very helpful, and the systems for booking, payments, etc, worked really well. The best thing was the quality of work, professionalism and courtesy of Jake and Brendan. A huge thanks to them for turning my garden into a place of beauty and joy. Hard work, knowledge and experience showed!

At my family’s old home, we’ve always relied on Armstrong Gardens when our little patch needs mowing (and some professional vision). They cover the basics like lawn care, pruning, and weeding, but also offer full-blown garden design for a total transformation.

Their pricing leans on the premium side (concept plans start at around £500), but my elderly parents don’t seem to mind if it means having a beautiful garden year-round. It’s great that they can opt for regular maintenance or choose one-off design projects for special occasions.

I also appreciate the company’s unique extras, such as UrbanPods (bespoke, modern garden rooms) for when I need some privacy. Armstrong also offers specialist landscaping that smaller firms don’t touch.

The downside is, their services are best suited for bigger budgets (not mine, but my parents, in this case!), so not ideal if you just want a simple garden tidy-up. They’re also in high demand, which can lead to longer waits to secure a slot.

Pros

  • Design-led expertise
    Specialist builds
    Commercial credibility

Cons

  • Premium pricing
    Longer lead times

The work has now been completed to the usual excellent standard

After the recent storms managed to destroy our front fence, I asked Armstrong if they could repair the damage following the excellent work they did on our garden last year. They responded really quickly to make the fence safe and then scheduled for Jodan to review the damage and plan what work was needed. The work has now been completed to the usual excellent standard. Again, the level of friendliness, skill and professionalism displayed by the team was fantastic.

It was a major project which was delivered on time

We are delighted with the service & work delivered by the Armstrong team for our garden. From initial planning with Owen & Fraser, to the work being carried out by Paddy, Jamie and team, we have been really impressed. It was a major project which was delivered on time and to a very high standard. We were kept up to date throughout, and the team were very accommodating to make the tweaks we wanted to the original plan as the work progressed. We would absolutely recommend Armstrong’s excellent experience from start to finish.

My neighbour’s patch used to look ordinary, but Spruce Garden Services turned it into our street’s showcase. I asked my neighbour about them, who said their prices were fair and clear, with fixed rates for maintenance, and quotes that don’t shift later.

They handle the usual lawn care, pruning, and weeding, but also offer full garden design and hard landscaping. You can book them for regular year-round visits or one-off tidy-ups, depending on your needs.

The team uses an eco-friendly approach, both in careful waste disposal (I was watching from my window!) and in the use of organic treatments. I like that they also cover extras like pressure washing, snow clearing, and those living walls I’ve been coveting for years.

However, complex projects can stretch out careful budgets compared to small, local gardeners. The company’s popularity means it could get harder to book them during spring and summer.

Pros

  • Year-round reliability
  • Versatile skillset
  • Fixed pricing

Cons

  • High demand during spring and summer
  • Pricier fees for bigger projects

The guys are wonderful, helpful, and knowledgeable

The guys are wonderful, helpful, and knowledgeable. They maintain my dad’s garden and have replanted new trees in my garden. Nathan and Scott were brilliant and made us aware of drainage, which we will look at soon.

Our office grounds looked tired and uninspiring until my bosses brought in Edinburgh Gardening Services Ltd. The team handled all the essentials, like lawn care, pruning, and weeding, with the same care they’d give a private garden.

Their pricing was competitive for a commercial contract, and they tailored a regular maintenance schedule around our business hours. That flexibility meant tidy borders and neat hedges without disrupting daily work.

So far, I’ve observed that seasonal work like hedge trimming and garden clearings is done on time and with a professional finish. I also like their eco-friendly practices, with proper SEPA-approved waste disposal that keeps our environment clean and safe.

The cons? They’re not the cheapest gardeners in Edinburgh, even for small one-off jobs. During the busy spring and summer months, booking extra visits can take longer than expected, as well.

Pros

  • Open daily
  • Bespoke maintenance plans
  • Commercial strength
  • SEPA-certified waste removal

Cons

  • Not ideal for small, casual jobs
  • Peak-season delays

The job was carried out to a high standard

Jamie and his team did an excellent job of cutting back and tidying my sister’s very overgrown garden prior to it being sold. The job was carried out to a high standard and left tidy. Very professional service and good value. Would highly recommend.

My snobby sister swears by Bernie Reddington Gardens and won’t stop showing off her borders to visitors. This is all due to Bernie handling lawn care, pruning, weeding, and even fresh planting schemes with a plantswoman’s touch.

Surprisingly, pricing is fair even for bespoke garden work, and my sister can choose between seasonal visits or one-off garden rescues. Bernie also offers her coaching sessions, so she can boast about “learning” while her gardener does the heavy lifting.

Seriously, though, the eco-friendly side of this service is impressive. There’s the use of organic soil, thoughtful pruning methods, and sustainable planting choices (nothing too fancy or invasive). Even her overgrown beds came back to life without harsh shortcuts.

The downside is that Bernie focuses on specialist planting and coaching, so large landscaping or construction projects aren’t on the menu. Her work is also in high demand among homeowners, so expect to wait a bit for her services.

Pros

  • Expertise in borders, seasonal bulbs, and garden design
  • Personalised gardening coaching
  • Organic methods
  • Tailored maintenance

Cons

  • Limited gardening services scope
  • Solo specialist = high demand

Bernie is efficient and knowledgeable

Our large herbaceous border was completely out of control, with all the wrong plants in all the wrong places. We got Bernie in to clean it up, reorganise existing plants, advise us on new planting, order and supervise delivery and placing of new plants, and generally get us sorted out. Delighted with the outcome. Bernie is efficient and knowledgeable, friendly and helpful, and always does exactly what she says she’ll do. Thoroughly recommended.

– Roger Stewart, Google Review

I have learnt loads from her about plants

Bernie has been restoring, nurturing and planting my garden for several years now. The work she had done, particularly prior to lockdown, meant we had a far more pleasant time in our back garden than we might have done. I have learnt loads from her about plants and their habitats. I have always found her responsive to my ideas, but also willing to steer me gently towards better solutions as well! My garden is relatively small, full of dogs (3!) and north-facing, but she has risen to the challenge. I can thoroughly recommend working with Bernie.
