Fun doesn’t sleep with these 11 best things to do at night in Edinburgh!
I’m a proud night owl. Sure, I can drag myself out of bed early when necessary, but I truly come alive when the sun goes down.
One of the things I love most about Edinburgh is that the city doesn’t sleep when the daylight fades. Whether you’re up for something lively or just want to unwind, there’s plenty to keep you entertained after dark.
So, if you’re anything like me (or just struggling to fall asleep), here are some of my favourite things to do here at night!
Have a laugh at the Monkey Barrel Comedy Club
– Media from tiernancomedian
Address: 9 to 12 Blair St
Contact Details: [email protected]
Operating Hours:
Monday to Friday, 6:00 pm to 12:00 am
Saturday, 4:00 pm to 12:00 am
Sunday, 6:00 pm to 12:00 am
For a cracking night out in Edinburgh, Monkey Barrel Comedy Club is the place to be. Tucked away in the Old Town, this wee gem serves up big laughs with a mix of homegrown talent and top-notch international acts.
It’s the kind of spot where you come for a giggle and leave with aching sides.
Highly rated by The Telegraph, The Scotsman, and The Metro, the club runs themed shows almost every night, so there’s always something fresh to catch. Whether you’re out with pals or just fancy a laugh over a dram, this spot never disappoints.
Tips:
- If you’re 16 or 17, you can catch the laughs until 11 pm—as long as you’ve got an adult with you.
Younger than that? You’ll need to check if the show allows under-16s, and even then, you’ll have to head out by 10 pm. I highly recommend always giving the event details a quick look before booking!
- Do you like planning ahead? Check their weekly schedule for upcoming shows. Tickets tend to sell out quickly, especially when international comedians hit the stage, so it’s best to book a few days ahead. Trust me, you don’t want to miss out on a good seat!
Dare to explore the underground vaults with Auld Reekie Tours

Operating Hours:
Monday to Sunday, 10:00 am to 5:00 pm
If you can stomach exploring haunted places in the dead of night, I highly recommend exploring the underground vaults of the city through the Vaults and Graveyard Tour or Auld Reekie Tours. I’ve tried it many times, and I don’t think they’ve disappointed me once.
The tour begins at Greyfriars Kirkyard with the tale of Greyfriars Bobby before diving into chilling stories of body snatchers at Covenanters’ Prison. Wander through the eerie Niddry Street vaults. Who knows, you might even sense a ghostly guest!
Tips:
- Want to save a few quid? Go for the group rate! Instead of paying £24 each, a group of four only pays £17.50 per person—a proper bargain for the number of eerie spots you’ll explore. Grab some pals and make a night of it!
- This tour is best for those 12 and up, but if you’ve got a wee one who loves a good ghost story, you might just get away with bringing them along—no guarantees, though! Best to check ahead.

Operating Hours:
Monday, Thursday to Saturday, 12:00 pm to 12:00 am
Tuesday, Wednesday, and Sunday, 12:00 pm to 11:00 pm
Whenever my friends from abroad visit, I make sure to take them to the Jolly Judge for a late-night dram. They’re always amazed by Edinburgh’s warm and lively pub scene, so a proper night out is a must.
This is one of my go-to spots because it’s got that classic pub feel, tucked away in the basement of an old building. The open log fire adds to the cosy charm, making it the perfect place to unwind, catch up, and enjoy a few pints of ale.
Tips:
- I highly recommend booking a table when there’s an event here. Events and quiz nights usually start at 8:30 pm every Monday, but stay tuned to their social media page for updates.
- There is no parking available within the premises, so your best bet is to park at the nearest public parking lot at Johnston Terrace or ParkBee APCOA. There is also a JustPark lot, which is open 24/7 but you’ll have to walk around the Edinburgh Castle grounds to the pub.
Indulge your inner connoisseur at Whighams Wine Cellars

Monday to Wednesday, 12:00 pm to 11:00 pm
Thursday to Saturday, 12:00 pm to 12:00 am
Sunday, 12:00 pm to 10:00 pm
For a classy yet cosy night out in Edinburgh, Whighams Wine Cellars is a place you should keep on your radar. Tucked away in a charming old cellar, it’s got that perfect mix of rustic character and refined elegance.
Their tastings are a treat—flights of reds, whites, rosés, and sparklers, each carefully chosen to highlight different flavours.
I first stumbled upon it while looking for a quiet place to unwind, and now it’s where I bring friends who appreciate a good glass of wine and a laid-back atmosphere.
Tips:
- If you’re planning a private dinner or celebration, this place is a fantastic spot. You can book a table over the phone, but for larger gatherings (more than 12 people), it’s best to reach out via email. They can host groups of up to 30, making it a great choice for special occasions.
- If you’re a fan of live jazz, the cellar hosts incredible sessions featuring well-known local musicians and even international acts. These performances run on select dates, so it’s best to book early to secure a spot.
Keep in mind there’s a small door charge to support the artists and keep the music going every week. For the latest schedule and details, check out their website.
Dance the night away at the Liquid Room
– Media from liquidroom_official
Address: 9C Victoria St
Contact Details: +44 131 225 2564
Operating Hours: Monday to Sunday, 12:30 am to 3:00 am, 10:30 pm to 12:00 am
For a nightlife experience with a twist, The Liquid Room is a must-visit. Housed in a stunning 19th-century Gothic church, this club offers an unexpected contrast—grand architecture on the outside and high-energy beats inside.
Some of my best nights out have been here, dancing with friends until the early hours. With a spacious dance floor and a balcony overlooking the action, there’s plenty of room to let loose (even if you don’t know how to dance because no one will notice).
Tips:
- Just a heads-up: The Liquid Room is all about dancing, and there’s no seating available. If you’re not up for being on your feet all night, you might want to check out a different spot with a more relaxed vibe.
- Need a breather after tearing up the dance floor? Head to the outdoor area. It’s the perfect spot to cool off, get some fresh air, and recharge before jumping back into the action.
Enjoy an evening of pure jazz fun at The Jazz Bar
– Media from thejazzbar
Address: 1a Chambers St
Contact Details: +44 131 220 4298
Operating Hours:
Thursday, 5:00 pm to 2:00 am
Friday, 5:00 p to 3:00 am
Saturday, 2:00 pm to 3:00 am
Sunday, 5:00 pm to 2:00 am
If jazz sets your soul swinging, The Jazz Bar is a must for a night of pure musical magic. My friends first brought me here, and after one evening soaking in the smooth tunes, I was hooked. It’s now a regular spot whenever I need a dose of live music.
As one of Edinburgh’s longest-running independent jazz bars, this place has seen its fair share of legends, from Kendra Kae to Eve Simpson and Jonny White.
With its cosy, dimly lit ambience and a soundtrack of effortlessly cool melodies, it’s the perfect spot to sip expertly mixed cocktails and let the music take over.
Tips:
- If the tunes are a bit too loud for your liking, just head to the bar. They’ve got free foam earplugs on hand for anyone who needs them—a small but handy perk for enjoying the music without ringing ears afterwards!
- Since this spot is in the basement of a 19th-century building, getting around isn’t the easiest. There are stairs and not much space for mobility aids. If you’re using a wheelchair, bringing a friend to help with the steps is a good idea.
Sing at the top of your lungs at Supercube
– Media from supercubeuk
Address: 58a George St
Contact Details: +44 131 226 4218
Operating Hours:
Monday to Wednesday, 5:00 pm to 3:00 am
Thursday, 3:00 pm to 3:00 am
Friday, 2:00 pm to 3:00 am
Saturday, 12:00 pm to 3:00 am
Sunday, 1:00 pm to 3:00 am
When every pub is packed and reservations are a no-go, Supercube karaoke is the ultimate backup plan. I’m no singer, but give me a mic and a familiar tune, and suddenly, I’m headlining my own sold-out show—at least in my head.
A couple of drinks definitely help with the confidence, but if you’ve got friends who cheer louder than you sing, you’re in for a top-tier night.
With HD TVs, an updated song library, and a sound system that makes even the worst singers sound decent, it’s the perfect place to belt it out like no one’s listening (even though they definitely are).
Tips:
- If you’re looking to stretch your karaoke budget, Friday is the day to book. Their TFI Friday deal gives you a free extra hour when you reserve a room for at least two hours online.
Just keep in mind that this promo runs from January to November, so don’t count on it for your December singalongs.
- Got a favourite tune that’s missing from the song list? You can request the bar to add a karaoke version through their website! They update their catalogue every month, though keep in mind that not every song can be turned into a sing-along track.
Use your sleuthing skills at Escape Reality
– Media from escaperealityedinburgh
Address: One Edinburgh Quay, 1 Fountainbridge
Contact Details: +44 131 629 3040
Operating Hours: Monday to Sunday, 12:00 pm to 9:00 pm
If you’re up for a proper thrill with your mates, Escape Reality is a cracking way to spend the night. Their escape rooms are inspired by horror films, action thrillers, and sci-fi classics—so if you love a bit of suspense, you’re in for a treat.
There’s a vampire-themed room and even an asylum one if you really want to test your detective skills. It’s a brilliant way to test your problem-solving skills, share a few laughs (or screams), and make some unforgettable memories with friends.
Just be warned: once that timer starts, there’s no turning back!
Tips:
- If you fancy a bit of bragging rights, keep an eye on the season’s leaderboards. The fastest teams and highest scorers get their group photo up on display, so if you’re feeling competitive, bring your sharpest mates and a solid game plan. Work together, think fast, and who knows, you might just see your faces up there by the end of the night!
- If you’re looking to save a few quid, try booking in advance or going on a weekday. It can get you a much better deal. Always check their website or socials before locking in your plans, and you might just catch a promo or discount!
Catch a performance at the Usher Hall
– Media from usherhall
Address: Lothian Road
Contact Details: +44 131 228 1155
Operating Hours:
Monday, 10:00 am to 1:30 pm
Tuesday to Friday, 10:00 am to 5:30 pm
Saturday, 1:00 pm to 8:00 pm
If you’re not a fan of clubs and physical entertainment, I recommend catching a performance at the esteemed Usher Hall. This historic building (that used to be a whisky distillery) houses some of the city’s most anticipated concerts and plays.
No matter if it’s a gig, a talk, or some other event, the sound quality is spot on, and the energy in the room is always electric. Locals love this place, and it’s easy to see why. There’s just something about it that makes every visit feel a bit magical.
Tips:
- Each floor has its own bar, but if you’re after more variety (or don’t fancy carrying cash), check out the nearby food and drink spots. The venue actually recommends them, and you’ll find plenty of great options just a short walk away. You can see the full list on this page.
- Heads up: if you’re booking tickets online or over the phone, there’s a £2 booking fee. It’s part of the venue’s funding arrangement with the City of Edinburgh Council.
Want to dodge the extra charge? Just pop by the Box Office when it opens or grab your tickets on the day of the show!
Strike down as many pins as you can at Lane7
– Media from lane7_
Address: Saint James Square
Contact Details: +44 131 373 0003
Operating Hours:
Monday, 11:00 am to 1:00 am
Tuesday to Thursday, 11:00 am to 12:00 am
Friday to Sunday, 10:00 am to 1:00 am
Lane7 is one of my favourite bowling alleys in the city, and it’s a fantastic spot to knock down some pins with friends. Whether you’re a casual bowler or aiming for a strike every time, the lanes here are lively, well-maintained, and perfect for a fun night out.
What makes it even better? You can enjoy drinks and food right at your lane while you play—because nothing pairs with bowling quite like a good pint. If you’re up for some friendly competition, bring a group that’s ready to go all in.
Tips:
- If you and your friends take this sport seriously, I recommend getting the unlimited passes starting at just £11 per person. The alley usually offers this at specific times, and it gives you unlimited access to all of their facilities inside the alley (not just bowling).
Note that you can only avail this every Sunday to Thursday only during the validity period. If you want to learn more, click here.
- If you’re looking to get the most out of your night, go for the Icebreaker Package. It includes a drink and a round of bowling per person, giving you more cash to spend on snacks and extra rounds at the bar—great value and an easy win if you’re planning a fun night with friends!
Test your mini golf skills at Portal Mini Golf
– Media from portalgolf
Address: 10 New Market Rd
Contact Details: +44 131 443 0404
Operating Hours: Monday to Sunday, 10:00 am to 11:00 pm
For a fun night out with a nostalgic twist, head to Portal Mini Golf. This glow-in-the-dark, 18-hole course is packed with nods to classic video games and cult movies, making it a paradise for pop culture fans.
I thought I was good at mini golf until I tried out the obstacle courses here. They start off simple but get progressively trickier with some obstacles testing your patience (and your aim), but that’s all part of the challenge!
Tips:
- If you fancy switching things up from mini golf, there’s also a bowling area on-site. The catch? You’ll need to book your golf session in advance to get access, so plan ahead if you want to mix up your game night!
- Snap plenty of fun shots around the course and share them on Instagram! If your photo stands out, you could win a free round of golf on your next visit. Just be sure to tag their page and hit follow to be in the running.
