5 Best Driving Schools in Edinburgh to Ditch the L-Plates

  • Instructor Experience: We checked for DVSA-approved instructors with solid teaching experience and a strong local track record.
  • Learner Support: Nervous beginners, international drivers, and learners needing extra support deserve patience, not pressure. We favoured schools with calm, flexible teaching styles.
  • Pricing and Flexibility: We compared lesson rates, block-booking deals, cancellation terms, and weekend or evening availability. No one likes surprise costs before they’ve even stalled at a junction.
  • Mock Tests and Structure: We looked for realistic mock tests, clear lesson plans, and progress tracking. A bit of structure can make test day feel far less like a leap into the unknown.

My brother’s already planning to take his teenage son shopping at reputable local car dealers once he’s mastered Edinburgh’s road rules.

First, though, the lad has to survive the city’s hills, cobbles, and roundabouts without giving everyone palpitations.

That’s where finding the best driving school in Edinburgh really matters. A patient instructor can turn shaky starts and frantic mirror checks into proper road confidence.

That’s why, for this review, we picked the strongest local options based on learner support, value, and practical training.

How much does enrolling in a driving school cost in Edinburgh?

Driving lessons in Edinburgh usually cost around £35 to £55 per hour. Many instructors book lessons in two-hour slots.

A standard two-hour manual lesson typically costs £80 to £100. Automatic lessons are usually £90 to £104.

Buying lessons in bulk can lower the hourly cost. A 10-hour block costs about £340 to £500 for manual and £440 to £500 for automatic.

For 20 hours, expect roughly £660 to £1,000 for manual lessons. Automatic packages are around £850 to £1,000.

Intensive 30-hour courses cost about £1,200 to £1,350 for manual tuition. Automatic courses can reach £1,350 to £1,500, often with quicker test-booking support.

1. Colinton School of Motoring

Website

Address: 12 Stuart Wynd

Contact: 07931 412167 / [email protected]

Hours: Monday – Thursday, 9 AM – 6 PM | Friday, 9 AM – 2 PM | Saturday, 9 AM – 1 PM

Colinton School of Motoring feels like a good fit for learners who’d rather not be barked at while figuring out Edinburgh’s trickier roads.

It’s a family-run school with both male and female instructors, which gives nervous beginners a bit more choice from the start.

They cover standard lessons as well as refresher, motorway, advanced, and instructor training. That makes them handy whether you’re starting from scratch or simply trying to rebuild confidence behind the wheel.

I like that their approach seems geared towards steady progress rather than rushing learners through lessons.

For anyone who needs a calmer hand with clutch control, junctions, or city traffic, that’s a reassuring place to begin.

The main snag is weekend availability. They only open for a short stretch on Saturday and close on Sunday, so weekday learners get the better end of the timetable.

Pros

  • Family-run driving school
  • Male and female instructors available
  • Suitable for nervous beginners
  • Offers refresher, motorway, and advanced training
  • Provides driving instructor training

Cons

  • Limited Saturday hours
  • Closed on Sundays

She Helped Me Get Over My Nerves

Just passed my test first time after taking lessons with the wonderful Sheila! Couldn’t have asked for a better teacher! I’m a very nervous driver, but Sheila put me at ease from day one and kept me going with it, even if at times I hated every second of driving! Her kindness, patience and good humour got me through and ultimately to passing! Thank you so so much Sheila and Colinton School of Driving! I would highly recommend it to anyone looking to learn and become a confident driver!

Hours: Monday, 9:30 AM – 8 PM | Tuesday – Thursday, 9 AM – 8 PM | Friday, 9 AM – 2 PM | Saturday – Sunday, 9 AM – noon

practicaldriving with David is a good shout if you’d rather learn with one familiar face than feel like a number in a big school. David Grandy has been teaching since 2003 and previously worked with both BSM and the AA.

His style leans more towards patient, tailored coaching than a rigid conveyor-belt approach. That should suit nervous learners, especially when Edinburgh’s busy junctions and stop-start traffic start testing your patience.

I like that the setup feels straightforward and personal, with lessons shaped around the learner rather than a fixed formula.

Clear explanations and calm feedback seem to be a recurring strength in student comments.

The trade-off is the timetable. Fridays finish at 2 PM, while Saturday and Sunday lessons only run until noon, so later weekend slots are off the table.

Pros

  • Owner-led, personalised instruction
  • Teaching experience dating back to 2003
  • Previous experience with BSM and the AA
  • Calm, patient teaching style
  • Lessons tailored to individual progress

Cons

  • Friday lessons finish early
  • Weekend lessons only run until noon

Passed First Time With David

Huge thanks to David — honestly couldn’t have asked for a better instructor! I passed first time, and that says everything.

You’re genuinely professional, both in teaching driving skills and knowing all the Currie test routes inside out. Scotland should be proud to have an instructor like you, someone who actually cares about teaching and takes it seriously.

I learned so much from you, and not just driving. And I have to say, your personality made every lesson enjoyable; I was learning a lot and having a great time at the same time.

Wishing you all the best, legend 🙌🚗

A Patient Instructor Who Adapts to You

David is a great driving instructor and would definitely recommend. He was really patient and helped me pass my test first time! He is friendly and calm and really good at adapting the way he is teaching depending on how you learn and understand things, which was really important! 100% recommend David as an instructor for anyone who is looking to learn how to drive!

3. Able Driving School Edinburgh

able-driving-school-edinburgh

Website

Address: 94 Leith Walk

Contact: 07837 808698 / [email protected]

Hours: Monday – Friday, 10 AM – 4 PM

Able Driving School Edinburgh looks especially reassuring for nervous beginners who don’t fancy learning with a trainee.

Their instructors are fully qualified Green Badge holders, and the school has experience teaching both anxious and deaf pupils.

I like the door-to-door setup because it removes one more faff from lesson day. They offer Pass Plus too, along with advanced and defensive driving courses for motorists who want to sharpen their skills after passing.

The broader training options make this feel useful beyond simply getting through the practical test. There’s a bit more room here to build confidence rather than just chase a licence.

The main drawback is the limited published office schedule. They’re open only from 10 am to 4 PM on weekdays and closed at weekends, which isn’t ideal if you need help outside working hours.

Pros

  • Fully qualified Green Badge instructors
  • Experienced with nervous and deaf learners
  • Door-to-door lesson pick-up
  • Offers Pass Plus training
  • Advanced and defensive driving courses available

Cons

  • Limited weekday office hours
  • Office closed at weekends

Great Lessons and Passed in Three Months

I had a great experience learning to drive with Greg as my instructor. He was always patient and friendly and made every lesson very enjoyable.

He explained everything clearly and helped me build confidence, and thanks to his teaching, I passed after 3 months.

Would highly recommend Greg as an instructor!

Greg Helped Me Believe I Could Do It

I have been learning to drive with Greg, and today I passed my driving test the first time! He was so patient with me, considering I have a lot of anxiety around driving. I genuinely didn’t think I could do it – but Greg believed in me. I highly recommend him to anyone looking to start their driving lessons – extremely chill, laidback but also a great person to learn from.

Cheers Greg!

4. My Driving School

Website

Address: 14 Lothian Dr, Easthouses, Mayfield

Areas Served: Edinburgh and Lothians

Contact: +44 800 084 2860 / [email protected]

Hours: 24/7

My Driving School looks handy for learners who want more than just a few laps around Edinburgh before test day. They offer manual and automatic lessons, plus in-car Theory Test and Hazard Perception preparation.

I like that progress is logged after each lesson, so you’re not left guessing what still needs work.

Mock driving tests add another useful layer, especially if test-day nerves tend to turn your brain to porridge.

Their coverage across Edinburgh and the Lothians gives learners a decent bit of flexibility too. The 24-hour Google listing may be useful for those juggling work, uni, or awkward schedules.

The catch is the booking policy. Two late cancellations or missed lessons may cost you further tuition, while prepaid blocks are normally valid for only three months.

Pros

  • Manual and automatic lessons available
  • In-car Theory Test preparation
  • Hazard Perception training
  • Progress tracked after each lesson
  • Mock driving tests available
  • Covers Edinburgh and the Lothians

Cons

  • Strict late-cancellation and no-show policy
  • Prepaid lesson blocks normally expire after three months

Calm Lessons That Kept My Son Progressing

Jason just got my youngest son to pass his test today.  My son always enjoyed his lessons and how calm Jason was teaching and explaining skills. Along with taking time to go over things he was finding more challenging. My son found he always felt he was progressing well and got feedback on how he was doing. Jason was always really good at giving him next steps and what we could work on before the next to help his progress.  Jason also taught our older son and got him through his test too.

From Zero Experience to a Full License

Passed first time with Jay as my instructor. Lovely guy and got me from 0 experience to a full license in about 7 months. Really patient and accommodating when I was learning and always a good laugh; couldn’t recommend more

5. SAMZ AUTOMATIC DRIVING SCHOOL EDINBURGH

samz-automatic-driving-school-edinburgh

Website

Address: 4 Redheughs Rigg, South Gyle

Contact: +44 7356 056035 / [email protected]

Hours: Monday – Saturday, 9 AM – 5 PM

SAMZ Automatic Driving School Edinburgh is a tempting pick if clutch control has already tested your patience. They specialise in automatic lessons and pair learners with one instructor from start to finish.

Their nine training packages range from a short two-hour session to a much fuller 48-hour course. I like that larger packages can be split through Klarna or Clearpay, which takes some sting out of paying upfront.

The setup feels especially practical for nervous beginners or anyone who wants to focus on road awareness without juggling gears. There’s a clear path from first lesson to more intensive training if you need it.

The obvious catch is that SAMZ is automatic-only. If you want a manual licence, you’ll need to look elsewhere rather than hope the clutch suddenly becomes charming.

Pros

  • Automatic-only specialist
  • Same-instructor continuity
  • Nine lesson packages available
  • Options from 2 to 48 hours
  • Klarna and Clearpay payment splitting

Cons

  • No manual driving lessons/not suitable for learners seeking a manual licence

Great Support Before the Big Test

Passed my driving test today! A huge thank you to Mr Saad for being an excellent instructor throughout my lessons. He was patient, professional, and always helped build my confidence on the road.

I’d also like to thank Mr Mehran for taking me to my test and giving me some great tips and advice in the final 30 minutes before it started. His guidance really helped me stay calm and focused.

Thank you both for all your support. I highly recommend them to anyone learning to drive!

Passed First Time Thanks to Mehran

I passed my driving test at Musselburgh test centre in Edinburgh on my first attempt – all thanks to my driving instructor Mehran from Samz school. I have been learning with Mehran for 3-4 months. He is very patient, honest and respectful. I sincerely recommend him and this driving school for learners in Edinburgh!
