Edinburgh’s got some cracking golf courses, and I’d love nothing more than to play them like I actually belong on the leaderboard. Trouble is, the coastal wind has a habit of exposing every dodgy swing!

A sliced drive or shaky short game can turn pro dreams into a long walk back to the clubhouse. That’s where a good coach can make a proper difference.

I looked into local academies and instructors who can help sharpen technique, confidence and course management. Here’s where to find the best golf coach in Edinburgh if you’re serious about taking your game up a level.

How much does it cost to hire a golf coach in Edinburgh?

Private one-to-one golf lessons usually cost £45 to £100 for 45 to 60 minutes.

Adult group classes and clinics are cheaper at around £15 to £30 per session.

Junior golf lessons for ages 7 to 17 generally cost £15 to £35 per hour.

For more hands-on course experience, a nine-hole playing lesson typically costs £90 to £165.

Prices can vary depending on the coach’s experience, qualifications and training facilities.

Hours: Tuesday, 8 AM – 2 PM | Wednesday-Thursday, 8 AM – 1 PM | Sunday, 8 AM – noon

Mike McNally feels like a strong pick if you want coaching with a proper plan behind it. As a PGA professional and 2025 PGA Scotland Coach of the Year finalist, he brings plenty of credibility to the lesson tee.

What caught my eye most is his goal-based coaching guarantee. If you don’t reach the agreed target, he’ll keep coaching you at no extra cost until you do.

His sessions cover ball striking, short game and course management, so it’s not just endless tinkering with your swing. The covered studio is handy in Edinburgh weather, and clubs and balls can be provided if needed.

The main drawback is availability, as he teaches only four days a week. His 48-hour cancellation policy is fairly strict too, and the full fee may apply if you cancel late.

Pros

  • PGA professional with strong coaching credentials
  • 2025 PGA Scotland Coach of the Year finalist
  • Goal-based coaching guarantee
  • Personalised improvement plans
  • Covers ball striking, short game and course management

A Really Enjoyable and Useful First Lesson

I had my initial assessment with Mike yesterday. Thoroughly enjoyable and worthwhile experience. I took away many pointers and a few key points to work on.

Mike answered my questions in a very clear and instructive manner. He is a good listener and does not overburden you with too much complicated detail. In Mike I recognised a first-class coach and will certainly continue with his tuition.

A Patient and Encouraging Coach

Mike is a great golf coach as he is unfailingly positive and encouraging no matter how bad my shots are! He is able to pinpoint what I need to do to improve and is very patient when I have forgotten it all by the next lesson. He is definitely ideal for beginners like myself as he doesn’t make me feel stupid and his motto ‘ there is always hope ‘ keeps me trying to get better.

2. Marc Sadler Golf

Address: 6 Priestfield Rd N

Hours: Tuesday noon–7:30 PM, Wednesday 9 AM–4:30 PM, Thursday noon–7:30 PM, Friday noon–5:30 PM, Saturday 8 AM–3:30 PM (teaching hours)

Marc Sadler Golf feels like a good fit if you’re chasing more than just a prettier swing. His TrackMan setup and video analysis give you the sort of detail that can turn guesswork into proper progress.

I especially like the on-course lessons, where strategy, club selection and shot execution all come under the microscope. That’s the kind of coaching that matters when you’re dreaming of posting serious scores, not just smashing balls on the range.

The data-led approach should suit players who want measurable improvement and clear feedback between sessions. It keeps things focused without making golf feel like a maths exam.

The main drawback is scheduling, with lessons running Tuesday to Saturday only. His 24-hour cancellation policy is firm too, with late cancellations costing 50% of a single lesson fee.

Pros

  • TrackMan-equipped coaching setup
  • Uses video analysis for detailed feedback
  • Data-led approach for measurable improvement
  • Offers 90-minute on-course lessons
  • Covers strategy, club selection and shot execution
  • Suitable for ambitious, improvement-focused golfers

Cons

  • Lessons available Tuesday to Saturday only
  • 24-hour cancellation policy
  • Late cancellations cost 50% of a single lesson fee

My Game Improved So Much in Just a Few Lessons

Marc is a fantastic coach – I can’t recommend him highly enough. His instruction is very clear and he has an excellent teaching manner.

From just a handful of lessons, my game has improved tremendously. In particular, areas that used to scare me (chipping and putting) have started to become strengths! As a result, I’ve seen my handicap drop by several shots this season.

Helpful Drills and Easy-to-Follow Tips

I really enjoyed Marc’s coaching approach. He was very encouraging and reinforced the learning with a number of drills that proved effective. I appreciated the short videos which summarised the key points and I returned to these a number of times. Would strongly recommend Marc as a coach.

3. PJM Golf Custom Fitting and Coaching Academy

Website

Address: 154 Turnhouse Rd

Contact: 0131 339 7701

Hours: Daily, 8 AM – 6 PM

PJM Golf feels built for players who want coaching and club fitting under one roof. Head PGA professional Peter Mitchell leads the setup, with former European Tour player Bradley Neil bringing some serious playing pedigree.

The TrackMan 4 studio is a big draw if you like seeing what your swing is actually doing rather than guessing. It gives detailed launch and ball-flight data that can make practice feel much more purposeful.

I like that custom fitting is part of the picture too, with Chris Woodhouse heading that side of the academy. It’s handy if your equipment needs as much attention as your technique.

The main drawback is that this can feel like a fairly comprehensive setup if you only want a simple lesson.

Golfers after something more casual may find the academy approach a bit more involved than necessary.

Pros

  • Head PGA professional Peter Mitchell leads the coaching
  • Former European Tour player Bradley Neil on the team
  • TrackMan 4 studio for detailed swing data
  • Combines coaching with custom club fitting
  • Chris Woodhouse heads the fitting service
  • Good fit for improvement-focused golfers

Cons

  • Comprehensive setup may feel excessive for casual golfers/less suited to players wanting a simple, no-frills lesson

Simple Explanations and Plenty of Patience

I’ve been getting lessons from Peter, and he’s been fantastic. Takes his time explaining what I need to do in simple terms. I’d recommend him and the team to anyone.

The rest of the team in the club shop have all been incredibly helpful when I’ve been in as well.

4. Scott Dixon Golf

Website

Address: Dalmahoy Hotel & Country Club, Kirknewton

Contact: 07931 176 154 / [email protected]

Hours: Tuesday, 9 AM – 9 PM | Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, 9 AM – 5 PM | Thursday, 1 PM – 9 PM

Scott Dixon Golf looks especially appealing if swing theory usually makes your head spin. His coaching keeps things simple, with games, challenges, and guided drills helping technique develop without turning every lesson into a lecture.

I like that he focuses on grip, posture and movement in a way that feels less intimidating for newer players. It’s the sort of approach that could make a stubborn slice feel like a problem to solve rather than a personal betrayal.

His kids’ coaching follows a similar path, using play, creativity and problem-solving to build confidence. That makes it a friendly starting point for youngsters learning the game properly.

The main drawback is limited weekend flexibility, as his current schedule still excludes Sundays. Monday closures may narrow your options further if you prefer beginning-of-week lessons.

Pros

  • Beginner-friendly coaching style
  • Keeps technical jargon to a minimum
  • Uses games, challenges and guided drills
  • Focuses on grip, posture and natural movement
  • Kids’ coaching uses play and problem-solving
  • Good fit for golfers who prefer a relaxed approach

Cons

  • Limited Sunday availability
  • Monday closures reduce booking flexibility

Finally Making Much More Sense of My Game

Scott is amazing. He takes time to get to know you and exactly what you want, the level you are at and always takes lessons down the route that youd like. He works in a calming environment and I never felt pressured even when continually making mistakes.

His methods are far superior to any other teachers I have personally had any experiences with. The game makes much more sense now than it ever did and I am now aware of exactly what I have done wrong with any shot I play poorly so I can then correct this.

A Relaxed Approach That Lets You Enjoy Golf

Scott is an excellent coach, with a relaxed approach that puts you at ease. He allows you to explore what different shots feel like, so that you can make adjustments to your own game to improve outcomes. His focus is on enjoying the game.

5. Murrayfield Golf Academy

Website

Address: 43 Murrayfield Road

Contact: 0131 347 9961 / [email protected]

Hours: Daily, 8 AM – 6 PM

Murrayfield Golf Academy caught my eye because Jonnie Cliff works on more than just swing mechanics.

As an Advanced PGA Professional with mental-game training, he blends TrackMan analysis with coaching designed to keep your head in the round.

That’s especially appealing if your swing behaves on the range, then suddenly develops stage fright on the course. I like that his approach tackles focus, strategy and pressure alongside the technical side.

His remote coaching adds another useful layer, with app-based support and video feedback between sessions.

Juniors aren’t left out either, thanks to the structured Young Masters programme.

The main drawback is the 48-hour cancellation policy, which can cost you the full lesson fee if you cancel late. That’s worth remembering before locking in a session.

Pros

  • Advanced PGA Professional coaching
  • Combines TrackMan analysis with mental-game training
  • Covers focus, strategy and pressure management
  • Remote coaching with app-based support
  • Video feedback between sessions
  • Structured Young Masters junior programme
  • Open seven days a week

Cons

  • 48-hour cancellation policy
  • Full lesson fee may be lost for late cancellations
